Call for Proposals: BCSR Research Grants for the Study of Religious Tolerance (2026)

November 6, 2025

With the generous support from the Endowed Fund for the Study of Religious Tolerance, the Berkeley Center for the Study of Religion invites proposals from UC Berkeley graduate students and faculty on the topic of religious tolerance and intolerance. We hope to promote new and interdisciplinary forms of research on this topic and encourage proposals from any disciplinary or area studies perspective. We understand the study of religious tolerance and intolerance to include legal freedoms and limitations, but also to extend beyond them to social and cultural patterns of religious pluralism and control.

The maximum amount of each award is $4,000 for graduate students and $1,500 for faculty.

Funds may be used for research expenses such as research trips (travel, lodging, food), research assistance, equipment, and books. Funds may not be used for living expenses and summer salary. Funds will be available from January 2026 and must be used by December 31, 2026

Awardees will be expected to write a blog on their funded project for the BCSR webpage and attend the annual Berkeley Lecture on Religious Tolerance (to be held in April 2026). At the end of the grant period, awardees must submit a report of their activities and expenses.

An application must include the following (in a single combined document):

  • Proposal about your project and how it relates to religious in/tolerance (two pages)

  • Budget

  • Timeline

  • CV
